WORK IN PROGRESS

Publicity Release - 27/10/06

During late October and November 2006 vegetation clearance will be taking place near the entrance to Penlee Quarry.  This is being undertaken by MDL Developments Ltd using appropriate firms with experienced and qualified staff specialising in vegetation clearance and the use of long-reach equipment.  Appropriate lane closure measures for part of Cliff Road, Newlyn have been agreed with Cornwall County Highways by Messrs. Nick Berryman.  The objectives of this work are:-

To clear walls and especially a large 8 m high granite structure to permit a structural engineering inspection required by the County Council.
To improve visibility at the existing quarry entrance especially with respect to traffic  coming from Mousehole.
To complete a programme of routine site maintenance, clearance and security measures.

Updated on 20th February 2006

Relatively minor works on site continue in an effort to keep improving Health & Safety and Security. Over the past 18 months nearly all the site perimeter fence has been either replaced or improved, together with the creation of on site safety features such as edge protection, access roads, etc. Tremendous progress has been made and security is constantly present but the site will always remain a great danger to the public in its present form.

Nearly all site investigations are complete with all fauna and flora now recorded and logged. However, it does remain difficult to establish existing and historic levels of benching due to extensive backfill of aggregate material. The most reliable method to confirm matters is to dig trial pits, which is carried out from time to time.
