Penzance Promenade

INTRODUCTION

The promenade is seen as an important link between Penzance and Newlyn.

The existing promenade offers basic facilities in terms of benches and access to the pebble beach. The promenade has been damaged by weather and it has been subject to frequent structural repairs. When a severe storm coincides with high tides the promenade road has to be closed. The beach level has reportedly dropped considerably over the last 30 years. The loss of beach material results in loss of amenity as well as exposing the base of the sea wall.

The Jubilee Pool provides facilities for uncovered sea swimming during the summer season. Adjacent to the promenade are a range of residential and visitor accommodation, with some shops and leisure facilities as well as
areas of open space.

The proposed development provides for the restoration of the sea wall and protection from future wave attack. Additionally the option of replenishing the beach sand through the construction of groynes or offshore reefs is
included in the proposal.

The Western Promenade was constructed the 1840’s and since that time the sandy beach has been lost to erosion and the sea wall of the Promenade has been badly damaged. The proposed development would repair the damage to the sea wall and offer protection against future damage with the provision of a sandy beach through groynes or offshore reefs.
